I want to become a medical assistant because...
By Colleen Buckley-Gatto
I want to have a career that is meaningful not just to me, but to others. A respectable career that is satisfying both spiritually and emotionally.
You know that feeling you get when you have accomplished a goal? That's what it feels like. As a medical assistant you get a feeling of satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment. As a medical assistant you have an opportunity to affect people and their well being on a daily basis. That's a powerful thing.
My mother worked in the medical field for 25 years as a medical secretary. I took care of her after she was diagnosed with cancer. While she was undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, it was a scary time for both of us. Most people find any medical situation a bit scary; there are questions, tests, treatments, results, referrals on and on. However, because of the kind and supportive staff we encountered in doctors' offices, infusion centers, labs, and hospitals we were able to manage the experience with a positive attitude. These professionals affected both of our well being in a positive way. For my mother they helped her physically feel better, comfortable, or stronger. For me they helped with information, support, a kind word, and an open ear.
As I considered a new career after twenty years in another profession, medical assistant was the first thing that came to mind. Not because the field was currently in need of professionals and not because of the money; but because if I have to go to work every day, I want to feel I have had a positive effect in someone's life. I want to have that feeling of satisfaction for a job well done. If you have a job that can affect people in a positive manner on a daily basis, I believe you have a job that has real value.
Don't get me wrong, not every day is going to be perfect. Not every situation can be happy and not everyone will be feeling better; but it can be positive. If I can have a positive effect on someone's well being, by using the knowledge and skill I have gained becoming a medical assistant, then I am well on my way to having a satisfying and meaningful career. And isn't that what having a career is all about? I know I made the right choice. Now it is your turn.
