Legal Counsel Balasa Receives I.C.E. Lifetime Achievement Award
The AAMA congratulates Legal Counsel Donald A. Balasa, JD, MBA, ICE-CCP, on receiving the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (I.C.E.) 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award. I.C.E.’s most prestigious award, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals whose long-standing, extraordinary contributions have advanced the credentialing profession.
Throughout his many years of service, Balasa has dedicated extensive time and expertise to the broader credentialing community through volunteer leadership, standards development, advocacy, and education. Balasa has held numerous leadership roles with I.C.E. and its affiliated initiatives, including chairing the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). His work on accreditation and standards revision efforts has helped strengthen credentialing practices and promote public protection and professional competency.
“In every sense, he has left an indelible mark on the credentialing community. His decades of leadership, volunteer service, scholarship, and advocacy have strengthened both I.C.E. and the broader profession,” said AAMA Executive Director Annie Storey, MS, CAE. “Few individuals have contributed as extensively or as effectively to advancing the principles of high-quality credentialing.”
AAMA Certification Director Katie Gottwaldt, ICE-CCP, has worked alongside Balasa since 2018. She has experienced firsthand the impact of his mentorship. “[Balasa] has consistently challenged me to consider issues from multiple perspectives and pushed me to become a stronger credentialing professional,” said Gottwaldt. “His influence has shaped the way I approach certification program decisions—and I know I am far from alone in that experience.”
Balasa’s career reflects a sustained commitment to advancing the credentialing profession and supporting the organizations and professionals that uphold its standards. The AAMA congratulates Balasa on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his continued contributions to medical assisting and the credentialing community.
