To recertify your CMA (AAMA)® credential by continuing education (CE), you must accumulate 60 recertification points. At least 30 of the required 60 recertification points must be from AAMA-approved continuing education units (CEUs). The CMA (AAMA)® Recertification by Continuing Education Application provides greater detail on the requirements for recertification via CEUs.
Trying to locate the best opportunities for CEUs? The AAMA provides a diverse array of options:
- State Society Events. State societies can submit their upcoming events worth CEUs to the AAMA Facebook Page. These online events are typically made available to medical assistants from any state.
- CPR Cards. Two-year CPR cards issued within the applicant’s recertification period can be counted as four clinical AAMA recertification points. Up to three two-year CPR cards may be submitted for a total of 12 CEUs.
- Free Online Courses. Online courses, such as the Smiles for Life Program, provided by partnership organizations offer information on important topics.
- ABC Programs. The AAMA e-Learning Center offers an assortment of Assessment-Based Certificate (ABC) programs on various topics, including geriatrics, telemedicine, allied health education, and more! Each program is made up of several courses. In addition to AAMA CEUs, a certificate is awarded when all the courses within a program and a final assessment are completed.
- Medical Assisting Today Tests. The AAMA bimonthly magazine offers a CE article and test within each issue. While the mail-in deadline is usually a couple of months after publication, you can take previous CE tests on the e-Learning Center.
- Population Health Module. The AAMA launched the Population Health Module (11 CEUs) to empower medical assisting professionals with refined skills and knowledge so they can enhance their ability to improve health outcomes for patients in their community. Complete the module’s six courses and final assessment to earn a digital badge.
